Rewilding the ocean with oyster reef restoration

At Oyster Heaven, we’re restoring one of the most vital and overlooked ecosystems on Earth: oyster reefs.

These remarkable creatures clean the water, provide habitat for hundreds of species, and protect coastlines from erosion and storms.

But today, oyster reefs are functionally extinct in the North Sea, with only a few scattered, degraded patches remaining.

When these reefs disappeared, we didn’t just lose a species, we lost the foundations of entire
marine ecosystems.

We're here to change that!

We’ve developed a cost-effective and scaleable system for building large and resilient oyster reefs at scale.

By creating living structures made of millions of oysters, we restore ecosystems that grow, strengthen, and expand naturally as the reef matures.

Through our Ocean Restoration Program, we are partnering with expert marine organisations to help restore seagrass, oyster reefs and seaweed, which provide vital habitats for marine life such as fish. The Programme aims to restore 1,500 hectares of marine habitats in Europe by 2023.

Oyster reefs can significantly reduce marine pollution from sewage and nutrient runoff from farming. Oyster Heaven has developed a low-cost bio-degradable substrate that will be suitable for establishing oyster reefs in areas where the seabed has been damaged. The substrate is easily manufactured and transported and can be deployed from boats. This is a significant step forward in the effort to establish new reef systems or restore areas of existing reef that have been lost.
